The Douglas DC-6, crafted by Douglas Aircraft Company from 1946 to 1958, was initially designed as a military transport near the end of World War II but later adapted for long-range commercial use. More than 700 were built, with many still in operation today for cargo, military, and wildfire control purposes. In U.S. Air Force service, it was known as C-118 Liftmaster, while in the United States Navy before 1962, it was designated R6D; after this year, all Navy variants were also recognized as C-118.
