The Douglas DC-6 is a piston-powered airliner and transport aircraft constructed by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1946 to 1958. Initially designed as a military transport towards the end of World War II, it was later adapted for the long-range commercial market post-war. Over 700 were built, many of which are still in use today for cargo, military, and wildfire control tasks. In the United States Air Force, the DC-6 was known as the C-118 Liftmaster; meanwhile, in the United States Navy (until 1962), it was designated as the R6D. From 1962 onwards, all U.S. Navy variants were given the C-118 designation.
