The Douglas DC-6, a piston-powered airliner and transport aircraft produced by the Douglas Aircraft Company between 1946 and 1958, initially conceived as a military transport during World War II but later transformed for the long-range commercial market. Over 700 were built and continue to fly today in roles such as cargo, military service, and wildfire control. In United States Air Force service, it was known as the C-118 Liftmaster, while in the United States Navy service prior to 1962, it was designated R6D, with all variants later redesignated as C-118 post-1962.
