The Douglas DC-6, a piston-powered airliner and transport aircraft by the Douglas Aircraft Company (1946-1958), was initially designed as a military transport but later adapted for long-range commercial use. Over 700 were built; many still fly today in cargo, military, and wildfire control roles. Known as the C-118 Liftmaster in the United States Air Force and R6D in the United States Navy until 1962, all U.S. Navy variants were then designated as the C-118.
