Subsequently, it was repurposed for the long-range commercial market. Over 700 were manufactured and many still operate today in cargo, military, and wildfire control roles. The DC-6 was also recognized as the C-118 Liftmaster in US Air Force service and R6D in the US Navy until 1962 when all variants were designated as C-118.
