The Douglas DC-6 is a piston-powered airliner and transport aircraft produced by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1946 to 1958. Initially designed as a military transport during World War II's closing stages, it was later adapted for the long-range commercial market post-war. Over 700 DC-6s were constructed and numerous examples still fly today in roles such as cargo transportation, military service, and wildfire control. The DC-6 held the titles of C-118 Liftmaster in United States Air Force operations and R6D with the United States Navy before 1962, after which all U.S. Navy variants were designated as C-118.
