The DC-4, initially serving Eastern and United prior to WWII in 1939, was later adapted for military use during the war, with 1100 C-54s and R5Ds produced. Subsequently, 79 more DC-4s were manufactured for airlines post-war while many C-54s and R5Ds returned to civilian commercial use. With seating capacity of 40-80 passengers, cruising at 227 mph, this aircraft had a range of 4250 miles and service ceiling of 22,300 feet; it's still in operation as of 2014.
