The DC-4 first entered service with Eastern and United pre-WWII in 1939, but due to maintenance complications and inefficiency, they requested a simpler aircraft. However, WWII's outbreak led to military production of 1,100 C-54s and R5Ds. After the war, 79 DC-4s were manufactured for airlines, while many C-54s and R5Ds transitioned back to civilian use. These aircraft had a passenger capacity of 40 to 80, cruised at 227 mph, boasted a range of 4,250 miles, and a service ceiling of 22,300 feet; DC-4s remained in operation as of 2014.
