The DC-4 was initially serviced by Eastern and United Airlines pre-WWII in 1939 but faced maintenance issues and low efficiency. Consequently, the U.S entered WWII after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, which led to a shift in DC-4 production for military use. Over 1100 C-54s and R5Ds were produced during the war, with another 79 DC-4s manufactured for airlines post-war. Many C-54s and R5Ds returned to commercial use, carrying 40-80 passengers at a cruising speed of 227 mph, with a range of 4250 miles and service ceiling of 22300 feet. Remarkably, DC-4s remain in service as of 2014.
