First introduced to Eastern and United pre-WWII in 1939, the DC-4 initially faced maintenance complexities and insufficient efficiency for commercial use. However, the US entry into WWII due to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor led to military aircraft production, resulting in 1100 C-54s and R5Ds being produced during the war. Post-war, 79 DC-4s were manufactured for airlines while many C-54s and R5Ds were converted back for civilian commercial use. These planes accommodated between 40 to 80 passengers, cruised at 227 mph, had a range of 4250 miles, and a service ceiling of 22300 feet; some DC-4s are still in operation as of 2014.
