The DC-4 entered commercial service with Eastern and United airlines back in 1939, just prior to the outbreak of WWII. However, they soon proved to be complex machines that demanded considerable maintenance and were inefficient compared to other commercial aircraft at the time. Recognizing this limitation, both Eastern and United subsequently requested an alternative aircraft be designed - one that would be more straightforward to maintain and significantly smaller than the DC-4 already in service. But their requests were preempted by Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, which abruptly drew the United States into WWII. Consequently, DC-4 production was shifted from civilian airlines to the military, resulting in the creation of an astonishing 1,100 C-54s and R5Ds during wartime. Once peace returned after WWII, another 79 DC-4s were produced for airline use. Although primarily passenger aircraft that could transport up to 80 people at a time, the DC-4 achieved respectable speeds of approximately 227 mph. It had impressive endurance capabilities as well - with a remarkable range of 4,250 miles and an exceptional service ceiling reaching a stunning height of over 22,300 feet. It's truly surprising then that many of these vintage aircraft remain in operation even up to this very day - yes, 2014 saw the DC-4 still serving proudly.
