The DC-4 made its commercial debut with Eastern Airlines and United pre-war in 1939 but soon demonstrated inherent difficulties in maintenance and proved too costly to operate efficiently. Consequently, both airlines sought a replacement aircraft with simplified design and smaller dimensions than the current model, which eventually led them to request development of a new plane tailored to their specific needs. Nevertheless, before any further progress was made towards these plans, the US was unexpectedly drawn into WWII following Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1939. Following this sudden escalation of international tensions, production of the DC-4 was reoriented toward military requirements and an astonishing 1,100 C-54s and R5Ds were manufactured during World War II. Another 79 DC-4 aircraft rolled off production lines for commercial airlines post-war while a sizeable number of those same C-54/R5D models eventually transitioned to civil air transport usage after hostilities ceased. Boasting capacities of approximately 40 to 80 passengers, these sturdy aircraft could reach cruising speeds of around 227 mph with an impressive range stretching over 4,250 miles. Not surprisingly, these impressive machines reached altitudes of up to 22,300 feet during level flight. Although time has taken its toll on some models, it is heartening to know that there are still active DC-4s operating as of 2014.
