The A-26B Invader was a Douglas Company development in the early '40s to replace the A-20 bombers and Martin B-26. Designed as a low-level attack and bomber platform, this aircraft boasted 14 machine guns or combinations of machine guns and cannons, an internal bomb bay, and a substantial bomb load capacity. It was fast, rugged, reliable, and saw widespread use during WWII, with A-26B models featuring a 'hard nose' for navigator/gun loader stations and eight machine guns in the nose. The A-26C model featured a clear nose, with the navigator bombardier stationed inside, while retaining wing-mounted machine guns for strafing capabilities. Post-war, these aircraft served in the USAAF and USAF under the B-26 designation until 1948. During the Korean conflict, both the B-26B and C models saw active service. The A-26 experienced a significant upgrade with refinements in wings, structure, power plant, external weapons storage, increased horsepower, and tip tanks for extended combat time. Designated as the A-26K, these upgraded aircraft participated in the Vietnam conflict in the mid-1960s. The A-26 and B-26 were also exported to other nations' air forces or repurposed for civil use, executive transport conversions, firefighting water tankers, and museum/warbird display aircraft.
