The A-26B Invader was a product of Douglas in the early '40s as a low-level attack and bomber aircraft, replacing the A-20 and B-26 models. Armed with 14 machine guns or cannons, it featured an internal bomb bay and high speed capabilities. Produced from 1943, these aircraft saw extensive action during WWII. The A-26B had a hard nose with a navigator/gun loader in the forward cockpit and eight machine guns in the nose for ground attack and low to medium level bombing missions. The A-26C model featured a clear nose, housing a navigator-bombardier, with machine guns remaining on the wings. These aircraft were used for strafing as well. Post-war, the A-26s remained in active service with the USAAF and USAF until 1948 when they were redesignated B-26. During the Korean conflict, both B-26B and C models saw significant action. The A-26K underwent major upgrades, including wing refinements, increased horsepower, external weapon storage, tip tanks for extended combat time, and served in the Vietnam conflict in the mid-1960s. These aircraft were also exported to other nations for military use or converted for civil purposes, firefighting, and museum displays.
