The A-26 Invader was developed by Douglas in the 1940s as a replacement for the A-20 bombers and Martin B-26. Designed as a low-level attack and bomber plane, this aircraft was equipped with 14 machine guns or combinations of machine guns and cannons, featured an internal bomb bay, and could deliver a substantial payload. The A-26B models, known for their "hard nose," had a navigator/gun loader stationed in the forward cockpit, while eight machine guns were mounted in the nose for staffing, ground attack, and low to medium level bombing missions. In contrast, the A-26C model featured a clear nose with the navigator bombardier positioned inside. The wing-mounted machine guns allowed for strafing capabilities as well. After WWII, these aircraft remained in service under various designations and were utilized during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. Additionally, they were sold to other nations' air forces, converted into civil use or firefighting water tankers, and preserved in museums or used for public display as flying warbirds.
