The Douglas A-1 Skyraider was an American single-seat attack aircraft originally designed at the end of World War II as a carrier-based torpedo bomber. The Douglas AD-1 proved so promising that it was spared from decommissioning after the war, and the Navy saw its potential for future use. Renamed the Skyraider, this formidable aircraft entered service in the late 1940s and went on to serve with distinction in Korea and Vietnam under the USAF, US Marines, US Navy, and other international military units. In the early 1960s, it was re-designated as the A-1 Skyraider, while variants were renumbered accordingly. The last Skyraiders were retired in the 1990s. This remarkable aircraft holds the distinction of being the largest single-piston-engine fighter-bomber ever produced and carried an impressive array of armaments.
