The Douglas A-1 Skyraider is an American single-seat attack aircraft originally designed at the end of World War II as a carrier-based torpedo bomber. After being spared from decommissioning post-war, the Navy recognized its potential and renamed it the Skyraider, which entered service in the late 1940s. Serving in various military operations around the world, including Korea and Vietnam with the USAF, US Marines, US Navy, and other forces, this aircraft was re-designated as the A-1 Skyraider and variants were renumbered in the early 1960s. The last of these remarkable planes were retired in the 1990s, but not before earning its place as the largest single piston-engine fighter bomber ever produced, capable of carrying substantial stores of weapons.
