The royal diadem known as the pschent was worn by rulers in ancient Egypt as a symbol of their authority over the unified land. The Egyptians referred to this powerful crown as sekhemty, meaning the Two Powerful Ones. This majestic crown combined the white hedjet crown of Upper Egypt with the red deshret crown of Lower Egypt, signifying the pharaoh's dominance over all regions. The pschent represented the ultimate power and control that a ruler held over ancient Egypt. It featured two animal emblems: an Egyptian cobra, or uraeus, ready to strike, which symbolized Wadjet, the goddess of Lower Egypt; and a vulture representing Nekhbet, the tutelary goddess of Upper Egypt. These were attached to the front of the pschent and referred to as the Two Ladies. Later, some versions of the crown replaced the vulture head with an additional cobra.
