'Double Check' Statue - Real Virtual Zone
sketchfab
The "Double Check" sculpture, created by J. Seward Johnson Jr. and situated downtown since 1982, captured the essence of a businessman preparing to enter an adjacent office building. Prior to 9/11, this striking piece was just another part of the urban landscape. However, following the devastating events of that fateful day, it evolved into an iconic symbol, as newspaper and magazine photographs showcased it shrouded in ash and later overwhelmed by flowers, notes, and candles left behind by mourners and rescue workers. "Double Check" became a poignant tribute to all those who lost their lives, also serving as a fitting metaphor for the city: despite being dislodged from its foundation, it continued to stand resiliently.
