Demetrius "Dositej" Obradovic was a prominent Serbian writer, philosopher, dramatist, librettist, linguist, traveler, and polyglot who served as the first minister of education in Serbia. He played a pivotal role in spearheading the Serbian national and cultural renaissance by advocating for Enlightenment and rationalist ideas while maintaining his strong Serbian patriotism and adherence to the Serbian Orthodox Church. As the founder of modern Serbian literature, he is commonly referred to by his mononym, Dositej. He became a monk at the Serb Orthodox monastery in Hopovo, Srem region, where he acquired the name Dositej. A prolific translator, he rendered many European classics, including Aesop's Fables, into the Serbian language. His contemporaries included notable figures such as Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Johann Jakob Engel, and Carlo Goldoni.
