This is a 3D scan of the plaster cast 'Doryphoros (The Spear Bearer)', created by Polyclitus circa 450 BCE. The scan originates from the cast KAS11 in The Royal Cast Collection at SMK - National Gallery of Denmark. This version has been downscaled to approximately 10 mb; to learn more about the 3D scans and download high-resolution models, visit www.smk.dk/3d. The sculpture 'Doryphoros (The Spear Bearer)' embodies the classical ideal of masculinity, showcasing a serene and harmonious soldier ready for battle. The line above the shoulder and the line above the hip converge in opposite directions, demonstrating the "contrapposto" position; the figure is in motion. Polyclitus created the original work, which was heavily reproduced. Greek satirist Lucian (120-180 CE) criticized the uniformity that resulted from such guidelines, stating that the 'Doryphoros' appears as a man fleeing after infidelity and walks with an awkward gait, as if carrying a radish up his backside. Even in the Victorian era, it was socially acceptable to appreciate numerous naked male and female figures at museums. Modern gender studies have highlighted how identity is shaped by repeating established patterns; artefacts like 'Doryphoros' and collections such as this one seem perfectly suited for this purpose. Henrik Holm, senior research curator at SMK.
