The Doryphoros (Spear Bearer) embodies the strict, classical definition of masculinity. A tranquil, harmonious, and powerfully built warrior stands poised for combat. The line above the shoulder and the line above the hip diverge: this is a classic "contrapposto" stance; the sculpture is in motion. Polyclitus created the original work, writing a treatise on the ideal proportions of a canonical piece, and his sculptures were copied extensively.
