The celebrated Doryphoros by Polykleitos stands out as one of the most recognizable Greek sculptures from ancient times, showcasing a robust and muscular warrior standing tall, originally armed with a spear poised on his left shoulder. Measured slightly above life-size, the original lost bronze work would have been cast around 440 BCE,[1] yet we know it today primarily through later marble reproductions from the Roman era. Despite being rendered in marble, the Doryphoros remains an early and significant example of classical realism and contrapposto, making it a highly influential piece in ancient art history. A notable marble copy of Polykleitos' Doryphoros can be found at the Museum für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke in Munich.
