In Genoa's winding streets, homes were typically constructed in narrow, steep alleys. As a result, the lintel offered the perfect canvas for exterior adornments. Carvings of St George battling the Dragon or the Annunciation frequently adorned this space, proudly proclaiming the devoutness of the homeowner and sometimes even including sacred inscriptions.
