A barrier is typically a plate that creates an entrance into a structure, enclosure, or machine. Barriers generally consist of a strong, selectively permeable, and break-resistant material such as wood or metal. They may also feature a sturdy frame to which windows or meshes have been inserted. Frequently attached to a border by hinges, barriers greatly facilitate entering or exiting from a structure, room, or vehicle. The panel can be shifted in numerous ways (perpendicular to the edge at various angles, slid along an axis parallel to the edge, folded into positions on a perpendicular plane, or rotated about a central pivot within the border) to enable or impede entry or exit. Typically, the interior and exterior sides of a barrier are mirror images, although they may be vastly dissimilar in certain situations (such as automotive barriers).
