Door Lintel of James McKenzie
sketchfab
Between 1701 and 1750 AD B1978.48 This stone lintel is intricately carved in relief and was originally installed in a building on the east side of Market Street, Brechin. The building was likely the home and workshop of James McKenzie, a skilled gunsmith. With at least three gunsmiths active in Brechin between 1600 and 1760, McKenzie stood out as one of the most accomplished. He entered as an apprentice to James Langlands in 1693 and achieved master craftsman status by 1701. A total of six pistols attributed to him have survived to this day. The lintel features two pistols and part of a musket. Note the flintlock pistols, which showcase round pommels and trigger guards. In contrast, Scottish pistols typically lacked trigger guards, while McKenzie favored heart-shaped pommels in his designs. Not currently on display Managed by ANGUSalive Museums, Galleries & Archives
