Door Handle Brake

Door Handle Brake

grabcad

This is a design based on the same idea as a brake on a car or bike. As the user opens the door and pushes down the handle, a wire (not shown) releases the brake callipers at the top and bottom of the door (shown as red), allowing the door to open and swing freely. As the user release the handle, the brake is reapplied and so the speed with which the door can move under the influence of the wind is greatly reduced. There is a button on the handle (shown as green) that causes the system to be disconnected from the handle, so that in light weather, the door will behave as normal. The system is compact and so could easily be hidden from view in a wall. The shaft shown is for illustration of the concept only and the system will still work with normal hinges but might require the brake disk to be offset into the wall.
