Donald Dewar, 1937 - 2000, led Scotland with vision and integrity as Secretary of State and First Minister. Dubbed "father of the nation" by the media, he played a pivotal role in reinstating the Scottish Parliament. Taking office in May 1999, Dewar oversaw the official opening in July that year with great enthusiasm. Despite being a private man, he had shared his ideal Christmas wish with journalists, which was to spend it alone "with an oven-ready meal and a stack of books". Sculptor Archibald Forrest aptly captured this sentiment by balancing Dewar's head on a pile of books, predominantly works by Ruskin, that also reflected his love for art. His appreciation for the Scottish Colourists was particularly notable.
