Domitianus

Domitianus, likely a seasoned Roman soldier from the mid-third century AD, was acclaimed emperor in northern Gaul towards the end of 270 or early 271 AD, and promptly began minting coins to proclaim his ascension. Today, it is widely accepted that this individual should be linked with the 'Domitianus' referenced twice in historical accounts as a key player in the politics of the era, although neither instance portrays him as a serious contender for the Imperial throne. Given that Domitianus's reign probably lasted only a few weeks after his initial acclamation and he failed to secure meaningful military or political backing, he is more accurately described as a Roman usurper rather than an emperor. His attempted power grab should also be viewed within the context of the tumultuous later years of the 'Gallic Empire' rather than the broader Empire's history.
