Domino Hub
thingiverse
This is a custom-designed hub/spinner for playing dominoes, specifically tailored for Mexican Train and other variations. It's sized to fit standard dominoes approximately 26mm x 51.5mm x 8mm in size, but can be scaled up or down according to preference. The outer dimensions are 100mm x 100mm, with a main plate that is 2mm thick and ridges that stand an additional 1mm tall. How I Designed This I designed and printed a new hub/spinner after losing the original that came with our dominoes set. Armed with only my vague recollection of its original shape, I started by designing it in full size to fit inside the tin where the dominoes are stored. Once I settled on 100mm x 100mm, I trimmed it into an equilateral octagon. I carefully measured the dominoes and left an extra 1mm in each direction for a center hole of 27mm x 52.5mm. Next, I created 27mm recesses 10mm into each side, leaving enough material between recesses that the remainder wouldn't be snapped off too easily. Then, I decided on a base height of 2mm and a ridge height of 1mm, resulting in a total of 3mm ridges. Given our dominoes were 8mm thick, there was still 5mm available for grabbing onto when removing the middle domino, which proved to be plenty.
