Cats (Felis catus) are small carnivorous mammals that thrive on meat. They are the only domesticated species within the family Felidae and are commonly referred to as the ‘domestic cat’ to differentiate them from their wild counterparts in the same family. A cat can either be a house cat, a farm cat or a feral cat; the latter roams freely and shuns human interaction. Domestic cats are cherished by humans for their affectionate nature and their exceptional ability to hunt rodents. Approximately 60 distinct cat breeds have been recognized by various cat registries.
