Dolerite (diabase)

myminifactory

Piece of coarse-grained intrusive Dolerite from a Tertiary age dyke structure at Grinshill quarry in Shropshire displays exceptional clarity. This specimen has been carefully cut and sectioned to produce microscope thin sections, revealing its complex internal structure. Dolerite, a type of dark-colored igneous rock, is compositionally equivalent to gabbro and basalt but texturally distinct from both. As a common rock type, it occurs predominantly in shallow intrusions (dikes and sills) of basaltic composition, where magma cools rapidly beneath the Earth's surface. Imaged using a Canon 5DS R camera and Stackshot 3x with turntable, this specimen produced 70 high-quality images. These images were then processed using Agisoft Photoscan at high levels to produce a highly detailed 3D model of the rock. This object is scanned by Fossils in Shropshire, showcasing their expertise in capturing intricate details of geological specimens.
