The Horniman Museum's prized acquisition from 1938 is a meticulously crafted model of the ill-fated dodo. However, this replica deviates significantly from the bird's true appearance. A plaster cast forms the head and feet, while a body draped in plump chicken or goose feathers serves as its base. The addition of whole chicken wings gives the model an air of authenticity. Meanwhile, a tail fashioned from ostrich or goose feathers completes the illusion. Unfortunately, this model is based on outdated paintings that failed to capture the dodo's actual characteristics. Recent discoveries suggest that these birds were likely slender and boasted longer legs than initially thought.
