The dodo or drone ( Raphus cucullatus ) is an extinct species of columbiform bird of the Raphinae subfamily . It was a flightless bird endemic to Mauritius , 2 located in the Indian Ocean (900 km from the island of Madagascar ). The dodo, as well as other birds from the Indian Ocean , were related to pigeons that had lost the ability to fly to adapt to a terrestrial life.
