My previous Amino Acid Expansion set needed a way to hold together. Following along with the DNA / RNA set that can be strung together, I decided to put holes through these amino acid pieces so you can use string to hold them together. This will help in class as you build large proteins, and can help at science fairs where you can attach these as display pieces. Lesson Plans and lab work is now available on my teacher pay teacher site, https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/3D-Printable-DNA-RNA-Manipulative-Lab-1-3452084 Print instructionsUnassociated tags: #bioProject, #MakerEdChallenge, #ScienceProject Category: Biology Print Settings Printer Brand: LulzBot Printer: TAZ 5 Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: No Resolution: .2-.4 mm Infill: 0-5% Notes: The essential and non-essential amino acids should be printed in two different colors. Post-Printing Break or sand any rough edges. Use a hand drill with a 2.8 mm drill bit to clean out any holes that did not print right. How I Designed This I used TinkerCAD to put a hole through the middle of all the amino acid pieces. Custom Section Project: Amino Acid display In this, your advanced students can show the sequence of protein, and how a mutation within it can affect the sequence and function of it. Audience This is for AP Biology, college Bio, college genetics, or professional geneticist. Preperation 3D print at least 3 set per student or pair of students. If they know what they are presenting, have them count how many of each amino acid they will need, and 3D print what they will need. Have a spool of fine thread, narrow ribbon, or other available thread handy, along with scissors to cut them. Find a site that has the amino acid sequences for your students, or have them find it, along with the DNA / mRNA sequence. Steps a. Chose a gene or genetic disorder to research. b. Find the amino acid sequence and DNA / mRNA sequence. c. Build the amino acid sequence, stringing the amino acids together. d. Use a post it note, flag, or notecard to mark where in the amino acid sequence where the mutation or genetic disorder happens. e. Tie off the ends. f. Present this amino acid sequence as part of a poster presentation or science fair. Results As a result of this, students should present their knowledge of genetic disorders, and what causes them.
