DJI Air Unit Mounts

DJI Air Unit Mounts

Here are several variations on mounts for the DJI Air unit and camera available. A basic mount holds the air unit only, separate from the camera, while three other variations feature an extended plate and mount for the DJI camera. The difference between these mounts is in the angle at which they support the antennae. Each of these mounts can be used as a backpack unit to transfer the air unit from one model to another, requiring only a separate 3 in 1 cable for each model. A final mount features an extended plate for a pan and tilt mount for the camera, based on 9g servos with a splined socket for a Corona 9g metal geared servo. All of these mounts securely hold the antennae in place, preventing MMCX connectors from coming loose during use. The air unit simply clips into each mount and is held firmly in place. Variations featuring flat antennae holders require a little wiggling to secure the air unit, but all sockets are accessible with the air unit installed. In a hard landing, however, one of my antennae did come loose, despite claims that these mounts are foolproof. To prevent this from happening again, I have now glued them in place using E6000 flexible glue. Initially, I printed these models standing on their antennae supports, but a weakness across the width of the unit resulted from the layered print. Now, I recommend printing the units on their base to eliminate this issue, although it creates a weakness in the two clips that hold the air unit in place. This is resolved by gluing a 1.32" birch ply plate over the outside face of these clips, with supports turned on everywhere. Another drawback with these mounts is that leaving the air unit switched on for an extended period causes it to heat up and potentially deform due to softened plastic. To overcome this issue, I have added an electronic switch in the power wires to the air unit, operated by a switch on my transmitter. The Fusion 360 files are included so that anyone can adapt these units to their specific needs.
