Dizi: Chinese traverse flute

thingiverse

A Dizi is a Chinese traverse flute that boasts an extra hole called the "dimo", which is situated between the embouchure and the upper fingering hole. This dimo hole is covered by a thin membrane from the inner surface of a bamboo shoot, causing it to vibrate like the membrane in a Kazoo, resulting in its distinctive sound. If you're outside Asia, you can find these dimos online or try using other thin membranes, or even cover them with scotch tape for a more ordinary flute sound. I've also uploaded a "no dimo" version that doesn't feature this extra hole and can be played like an ordinary traverse flute. The tuning is in G major and was made as an exact replica of my real Dizi. The upper part, primarily decorative, isn't necessary for producing sound. For material efficiency, you might prefer to print the "Dizi short" version instead. There are four STL files representing the entire flute with and without dimo, long and short versions. Since most 3D printers on the market can't handle the flute's length, I've also uploaded it in six pieces: Dizi 1 is the upper part, which you can skip for the short version; choose Dizi 3 for the version with dimo or Dizi 3 no dimo for the one without. Each piece can be assembled using epoxy glue, but ensure there are no air leaks and sharpen the sharp edge on the embouchure after printing. Note that the lowest two holes and the front and back ones are for stabilizing tones, not fingering.
