DIY enthusiasts have created a variant of the smartDIYs laser cutter using 3D printed parts. The assembly process is similar to http://en.smartdiys.com/smart-laser-mini/ but features a larger cutting area of 330*330 mm. Black open builds 500mm extrusion was used for both y-axis and x-axis, while the frame is assembled with two additional 430mm beams. The mechanical parts and extrusions were purchased from Europe at http://www.ratrig.com/. The quality is exceptional! An added feature includes simple 80mm feet and a holder to fit the laser to a 70mm beam fitted on x-axis. Additionally, three stepper motors, idler plates, and laser plates need to be printed 3 times each. The electronics consist of an Arduino Uno clone with GRBL shield V3.0 and three A4988 drivers. Power distribution and keyboard/led boards are designed with Adafruit perma-proto PCBs and UBEC. The Arduino is running the GRBL V0.9g firmware, modified to include Mr-Beam fork. The arduino connects to a raspberry pi running Octopi, a modification of the software to allow operation over wifi. The modifications can be downloaded from the Mr Beam page. A 2W M140 laser diode driven by a TTL driver is used in this setup. All wires are protected with a printed cable chain (Thing 34661). Endstops are fixed through holes drilled into the stepper and idler plates.
