DIY Kayak Safety Flag and Light
thingiverse
This collection includes various components used to create a kayak safety flag and light. A fiberglass driveway marker, commonly found at major hardware stores, serves as the base (available in 4' and 6' versions). The Scotty mount was designed by Prestonf and can be accessed through http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:793219. This design includes one of his models and fits perfectly on a Scotty mount. A vehicle replacement wedge type LED bulb is used for the light source. These bulbs are available at superbrightleds.com or Amazon, searchable by "921 wedge LED." They offer high brightness and operate on 12V power (an 8x AA holder is recommended, which can run for several days continuously). For optimal performance, cool white LEDs are suggested as they do not attract bugs or mosquitoes. The light's lens is constructed from a piece of 1/2" ID 5/16" OD vinyl tubing. Simply cut it to the desired length and assemble the components. A small hole must be drilled in the base for wiring passage.
