Home-Made Chessboard Made with CNC Machine: A Fun Project to Spark Ideas I recently created a home-made chessboard using a CNC machine, and I'd love to share my process with others. The path generation was done using Estlcam (http://www.estlcam.com/), but keep in mind that the files may vary depending on your specific machine setup. For inspiration, I looked at various chessboards online and found one that caught my eye: a classic board with letters, which can be found here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chess-board-with-letters_nevit_111.svg. I'd like to give credit to Nevit Dilmen for sharing this image. The base plate was made from an old oak countertop that I had lying around, while the white parts were crafted from pinewood. To begin, I leveled the oak plate on both sides and measured its height to program the milling process. Next, I carved all the numbers and chamfered the edges. Then, I milled out the holes for the white parts, carefully cutting them out 12mm deep. The white parts themselves were cut from pinewood that had been leveled to 12.2 mm. After assembling the white parts using wood glue, I knocked them into place. A lot of sanding was required to achieve a smooth finish. However, due to the oak plate's high moisture content and age, it began to bend slightly when cut out. As a result, some holes for the white parts were off-center. To fix this issue, I created wood filler from the excess sanding material and filled in all minor gaps, including the numbers and letters. Sanding again was necessary to achieve a flawless finish. Finally, I applied oil to protect the chessboard, and it was complete! I hope you enjoy my home-made chessboard made with a CNC machine – it's been a fun project!
