This diving suit is over 160 years old, it’s origins are not documented, it was built around 1870 probably by the brothers Carmagnolle of Marseille, well known in their time as diving apparatus builders, it’s conception might also have involved the english firm of Siebe Gorman. Because it was lost to time for over 40 years before being rediscovered, this artefact entered legend, it is told that the diving suit was lost during testing in 1876 and sank somewhere on the bottom of Marseille harbour, only to be salvaged years later which would explain it’s deteriorated condition, the remains of the diver were still inside they say.
