Distance Slab, Hutcheson Hill, Antonine Wall
sketchfab
The inscription on a sandstone slab of the Twentieth Legion found at Hutcheson Hill reads: "For Emperor Caesar Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pius, Father of his Country, a detachment of the Twentieth Valiant and Victorious Legion built this over 3000 feet." Three legions constructed the Wall across Scotland from Clyde to Forth. Around 142 AD, they erected stones to record completion of their stretches. This one features a Roman standard bearer in the center panel, being rewarded for victory over captives on either side, probably representatives of Southern Scotland's defeated tribes. The Antonine Wall stretched right across Scotland, from Clyde to Forth. Constructed around 142 AD, and occupied for only 20 years, the remains of its ramparts, steep ditches, forts, and bathhouses are still visible today.
