This is a display hanger that has more uses than for what it was designed. I designed this hanger to display another of my designs, the Monster Hunters Scoutflies Lantern. But, my wife immediately thought it also was a beautiful hook to hang bananas to ripen. It seems that hooks can serve as many uses as can be imagined.

This stand measures 243 mm from the hook to the base and is designed to display the lantern which, as designed, is 230 mm in length. To allow for differing designs of the lantern handle I am also designing an extend version which will have 267 mm clearance. I will update when it is ready.

Read the notes in Print Settings before attempting the print.

The Torture

The filigree design is difficult to near impossible to get perfect. But it looks so fine and luckily hides any minor imperfections. Make sure everything is right or it won't stick and will be dragged around the build plate. Success is a delicate balance between an elephant foot ruining the filigree's appearance and first layer adhesion.

Print Settings

Printer:

HyperCube Evolution

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

.2

Infill:

20

Filament:
3D Solutech PLA
Chocolate Brown

Notes:

There is a single print version and a split version of the support for smaller print beds.
The side patterns can be difficult to print particularly on the first layer. I printed the first three layers at 15mm/sec and still didn't get a 100% perfect first layer of the print. (Close but not quite.)

The filigree pattern has some small detail; to get a skin without holes set the slicer's "Skin Removal Width" to .4 or lower.

When slicing with Cura 3.6.0 set combing to "Not in skin." This setting has the hidden feature of allowing retraction on the first layer. The other combing settings don't do first layer retraction and will greatly increase the chances of dragging the filigree around the build plate.

The split version should be printed with the side down as oriented in the stl. With both halves printed with the same side down the parts will align correctly when assembled.

The split version's tang has a custom support so slicer support is not required.

If using a brim when printing the split version do not use the brim setting in Cura because it will add brim material into the open side patterns. Use instead a skirt of 10-20 lines with the distance set as .1mm.

The base can be printed upright or upside down. I printed it upside down on glass to give it a glossy finish.

Post-Printing

Assembly

If assembling the split version, glue the upper and lower stands together.

Glue the stand into the base.

Finish

After printing, my base had a slight warp to it that caused it to rock. I added some felt pads on the bottom that allowed the base to sit solidly.

Category: Decor
