A disc brake system slows down wheel rotation by applying friction between brake pads and a rotating disc via calipers. The disc, usually made of cast iron or composite materials like carbon-carbon, is connected to the wheel/axle. Braking force, generated mechanically/hydraulically/pneumatically/electromagnetically through brake calipers, engages friction pads on both sides of the disc, causing friction and slowing or stopping the wheel. However, if brakes get too hot, they lose effectiveness due to a phenomenon called brake fade.
