This is a detailed model of a typical kitchen dishwasher, textures included. History The first reports of a mechanical dishwashing device date back to an 1850 patent by Joel Houghton of a hand-powered device. Modern dishwashers have their roots in the 1886 invention of Josephine Cochrane, also hand-powered, which she unveiled at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. As the granddaughter of John Fitch, the inventor of the steamboat, and herself being quite wealthy, Josephine never washed dishes herself. Instead, she invented the dishwasher to prevent her fine china from chipping due to the rough handling by her servants. Models with permanent plumbing arrived in the 1920s. In 1924, William Howard Livens created a small dishwasher suitable for domestic use, featuring all modern essentials like a front door for loading, a wire rack for holding crockery and a rotating sprayer. Electric drying elements were added to the mix in 1940. Initially, adoption of dishwashers was highest in commercial environments, but by the 1970s they had become a common feature in domestic residences across the US.
