Discophoros, also spelled Discophorus, was a renowned bronze sculpture crafted by Polykleitos, the celebrated Greek sculptor behind masterpieces like Doryphoros and Diadumenos. As an exemplary representation of Polykleitos' 'canon', this iconic work showcased the ideal human form in sculpture. The sculpture depicts a robust, muscular young athlete poised in contemplation just before launching a discus into the air. Many replicas of Discophoros feature an additional tree stump, added to provide necessary support due to marble's inherent weaknesses as compared to bronze.
