The Discophoros, known in its Romanized form as Discophorus, (Greek: "Discus-Bearer") is a magnificent bronze sculpture by the renowned Greek sculptor Polyklietos, creator of the Doryphoros and Diadumenos, with numerous Roman marble replicas that mirror its grandeur. This piece must not be confused with the Discobolus of Myron, which depicts an athlete hurling a discus, as opposed to holding it.\r\nAs is the case with the Doryphoros and Diadumenos, the Discophoros was crafted as a prime example of Polykleitos's "canon" of the ideal human form in sculpture. This masterpiece features a robust young athlete in a poignant moment of contemplation before propelling a discus.\r\nMost marble replicas include an added marble tree stump - marble is less durable but more massive than bronze- to provide support for this sturdy figure. These copies often lack their arms, which are frequently restored.\r\nThis is a reproduction, or cast, that accurately captures the essence of Polykleitos's original work.
