Discus throwing is a discipline that requires great determination and skill. Mathieu Kessels, a Belgian artist born in 1784, was no exception. He studied under the renowned Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, likely beginning his apprenticeship in 1818. This exposure to the art world laid the foundation for Kessels' future success. In 1819, Kessels competed in a prestigious competition for young artists, sponsored by the celebrated Venetian sculptor Antonio Canova. His terracotta sculpture of Saint Sebastian pierced by arrows impressed the judges, earning him the top award. This achievement marked a significant milestone in Kessels' career and solidified his reputation as a talented artist. As Kessels continued to hone his craft in Rome, he became an integral part of several prestigious art institutions. He was a member of the Academy of St. Luke and the Institute of the Netherlands, showcasing his exceptional skills and dedication to the field. Additionally, Kessels held memberships in the academies of Amsterdam (from 1824 onward) and Antwerp.
