A disc brake functions by employing calipers to clamp pairs of pads against a rotor, or "disc," to generate friction that slows down or halts the rotation of an axle within a vehicle. This process converts kinetic energy into heat which must dissipate. Hydraulic disc brakes are widely used in motor vehicles, and the principles behind disc brakes can be applied to various rotating shafts.
