Diptych sundials - about the size of cellular phone - were highly valued instruments in the 15th to 18th century. The diptych sundial was a complex and elaborate device showing not only the solar time, but often including many other indicators. This model is based on a 15th century models combining many elements from various designs. It indicates the local solar time (set for my geographic location) on both the vertical and horizontal dials, as well as Babylonian and Italian hours, the months and zodiacs, lunar time with a lunar volvelle, wind direction and is equipped with a plumb level and a compass. The back shows the equation of time (the difference between solar and local time for the location) Original graphic designs in Inkscape (included as pdf files). Constructed out of boxwood and brass with laser engraved and etched parts. Small brass parts, including hinge, wind vane, etc. made with hand-tools only. Rather a frivolous project, but had fun with it. Not recommended as a money making enterprise...
